Ok guys I'm ready for a history lesson....what the heck are the start up rollers used for?

Mark, back in the day when starters could not turn the engines over fast enough to start them, they would push start the cars. But at some tracks, they had rollers. You would put the rear tires on them like a chassis dyno but the rollers would turn the tires, pop the clutch and fire. The rollers at LaPlace Dragway had a small block chevy running them.

Back in the good old days, dragsters didn't have starters. They had the towcars push start them. Then came the rollers. Some strips had them put in and you put your car on it and it would spin over and start the cars. Hope that helps.

I see Greg got out first, while I was typing.

Thanks guys...that was before my times but I wish I would have been around during those times. From what I've heard I would much rather watch the modified cars that ran at US 131 Dragway than the bracket cars of today.

Has anyone got a photo of Tom Martino's B/A Lumina or Tony Grasso's C/A, firebird.
I loved those paintjobs and would like to see them again if possible.

Hey Greg,

At my local track, Motion Raceway in Assumption Illinois (long since closed) they had a roller starter also, but it had a HEMI running it.

A moment of silence for all the fine tracks, cars AND drivers that are gone.

Rob Slavinski's automatic-equipped B/A Grand Prix. Before the introduction of altered automatic classes, automatic transmissions were allowed in altered classes and received a weight break.

Cordis and Mary Johnson's S/G Camaro. If you can tell me who was driving in this picture, I'll buy you an icy-cold beverage.

Scott - My bet is on Rick Ducusin. Do I get my choice of cold beverages?

It looks like I owe Dave Kommel an icy-cold beverage! Rick Ducusin it is.

No, I never drove that car, but I did drive Rick Ducusin's car. I'm pretty sure Cordis and Mary sold the Camaro to Burl Carter, who cut off the body and replaced it with a Cavalier body.
